1997 Grand Voyager won't stay running Sign In

I have a 1997 Plymouth Grand Voyager with a problem that has stumped everybody. It has a 3.3 liter V6 with 140,000 miles, 4-speed automatic, and all of the basic power options including a factory alarm system. It runs and drives great and still looks like new; it's never been wrecked. My problem is sometimes it won't start... well, it will start but it will only run for about 2 seconds and then it will die. I know when this is going to happen because when I turn the key none of the gauges will move and the odometer won't light up (neither will the transmission selector, [i.e.] P-R-D-1-2). I know it's not the fuel pump, it's new, and you can hear it working. All of the fuses and relays are good. I've had it checked and there are no problems that show up on a dyno, the check engine light doesn't even come on! Sometimes if I turn the key a few times it will fix itself but other times it will wait a couple of days to start up again. My wife hates my van but I love it and want to keep it for a very long time (I'm shooting for 300,000 miles!) Please help me before my wife sneaks it off to the scrap yard.

Your problem is not that difficult to diagnose but it has to be attempted when the problem is present. It can't be diagnosed if the problem isn't active at that moment so don't say everyone is stumped if they just can't duplicate the problem. there is a big difference.

Your problem could be in the ignition switch but it's probably more likely that you have a problem with the dash cluster itself which can interfere with the theft deterrent system. It can be cured if given to a knowledgeable tech and the problem occurs for a long enough period of time to test the circuits.

I'm sorry, I worded that wrong. When I said "everybody" I ment everybody that has looked at it, including during said problem. And that's just it; no one can duplicate the problem. I've pulled the ignition switch, I've pulled the dash cluster, I've pulled the whole dash apart. I can't find a short, a split or cracked wire, not even a loose ground. I'm assuming that it has to be in the alarm system, but how? Would you recommend that I getanother dash cluster from the junk yard? Could the cluster itself be shorting out? This is the first time that I've heard of this.

I wouldn't recommend just throwing parts at it. This might be one for the dealer. They have test equipment no one else has. They also have a parts department to experiment with.

Thank you for you time and experience but my wife would shoot me if I took my van to a Chrysler dealer. The last time I did that they raped me for $600... just to replace the front brakes on my work truck (2003 Dodge 1500). My butt still hurts after that one.

You could waste a lot more than that throwing parts at this problem that don't help.
