1998 Ford Explorer XLT
5.0L V8
145,000 Miles

My speedometer has been acting funny the past few months. It will work most of the time at lower speeds but on the highway it will go to zero. Sometimes if I bang the dash it will come back for a minute or two then return to zero. I took it to the shop and they said it will cost $150 to take the dash out and send it off to a mechanic certified to fix the dash. Then I would have to pay their costs as well. I have read some info about a speed sensor or maybe the connections in the dash. But I'm not sure how to access either. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

That's what the $150 is for. That's their charge to remove the cluster for access. I suggest you pay the fee.

Guest; Your symptoms smack (no pun intended) of a poor connection in the instrument cluster. There is a large connector that plugs into it from the back. The labor guide I have shows 1.4hrs. to R & R the cluster. I can only remember having to replace three instrument clusters in the past 40 yrs. And, two were for digital mileage readout inoperative. The third was because some bone-head damaged the cluster trying to remove the check engine lamp.
So, I'd be surprised if it's more than a poor connection, most likely, ground.
