cars description 1999 CHEVROLET CAVALIER 2 door coupe CALIFORNIA vehicle *motor 2.2 L4 *auto trans *miles 100k -minus these - -doesn't have these -power door lock -no cruise control -ETS instrument gauges? I' don't see it ? the cars' story the engine overheated on my 2nd day of ownership now the fan won't turn on ? I' can't remember if it was the engine warning light or the low coolant light ? but the temperature gauge did show overheating, and the water low warning lite, plus the water bubbling in the radiator was a pretty good indicator. I' replaced the radiators cooling systems thermostat so I' added 50-50 mix of dexcool to the water overflow tank, which was empty, then rechecked after warm up and toped it off. after that I' started driving around and noticed the cooling fan won't click on even after the motor gets very hot ! after more extensive stop and go traffic driving,I' became fearful of overheating it again,so I' turned on the A/C since theres only one cooling fan for both the radiator and the A/C condenser. so looked into it more and did the following: I' bleed the air from the CTS control temperature switch i.e:I' pulled out the CTS until water pored out from the CTS hole, possible inaccurate engine temperature readings if air pocket exist.,after that I'm still receiving inaccurate temp readings ? I' also bled air from the air bleeder valve on the pipe that goes to the heater pipe to the cars interior after doing all that the car cooling fan won't turn on ? also noticed the temperature gauge now only moves too about about 3/8 of the way to the right then stops moving further towards the hot zone even even thou engines is running and getting hotter by the second. continuing on I' tried the following.... I' swapped the the heater and cooling fan relays, that didn't make a difference fan wouldn't turn on still so I' jumped the wire in fuse block straight to the cooling fan, that works,so that eliminates the relays and wiring. I' don't no what the A/C wiring would play in this? since theres only two wires to the cooling fan a lt blue and ground black wire ?some how the computer turns this fan on? also tried removing the electrical connection from the CTS and the car won't start ? ------------------ here are some ohm volt readings from CTS I' really don't no what to look as far as far as the electrical measurements ? I' don't no what the electrical specifications are either for cts for this make ? ------------ electrical reading from the coolant temperture switch I' probed the CTS wires colors +yellow -black -+ respective of the polarity using the multimeter ohm's readings engine off key off ohms reading temp 65-70 engine not started 1968 ohm's ign [icon] sw on not running read 3.4 volts engine barley warm 745 ohm's 3.58 volts very warm 2.35 volts 300 ohm's I' probably need to do this electrical measurements over ? as I' don't no what to look for ? please help me before I' scream ! ---------------end

This is really a pretty basic system. The comp grounds the control side of the cooling fan relay to turn on the fan, weither it's for high engine temp or high a/c pressure. If you can turn on your a/c & the fan is coming on then the cooling fan circuit is in good shape. For some reason the comp isn't grounding the relay for engine temp. Usually if the temp sensor goes bad or has ref voltage problems it will set a code. You might want to start with seeing if you have any stored codes.......

Totto; According to my chart, which I can't seem to upload, the CTS resistance values seem to off quite a bit. Normally, the cooling fan(s) won't come on until the engine temp reaches around 230F. The CTS is rather inexpensive, and would be my first guess. Hopefully, someone can jump in with the darned chart. Loren SW Washington

I' also spoke to the dealer,he said "the car uses two computer modules,BCM and PCM" for A/C cooling, and I' would need a special,$1100.00 diagnostic code reader which could read both modules ? -- "History records that the money changers have used every form of abuse, intrigue, deceit, and violent means possible to maintain their control over governments by controlling money and its issuance." - James Madison -end

CTS; It is easiest to 'see' what the PCM is 'seeing' with a scanner. But, if you don't have one, yes, you can remove it. Put it in a pan (use your wife's best one...you'll be very popular) with cold water. Using her candy thermometer to measure water temp, take a resistance reading. Start warming the water very gradually, watching the ohmmeter. Compare the values to the chart that I can't seem to upload? Come on guys! I know one of you can upload the chart! But, again, these sensors are very inexpensive, and probably a lot quicker and easier to just replace it than get the wife upset! I used my wife's turkey baster ONCE to fill a battery. Geeeez. You'd thought the world was gonna end. Loren SW Washington

OK, I had to go searching through old printed archives but I found one. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Wow....That is one heck of a pattern going on there Hammer. Starts out as secondary ign pattern (damn..are those condensor ocsillations I see?????), goes to an a/c pulse generator & winds up as a hall effect switch.... Man you did dig deep for that one.........nice..........

Thanks, Hammer; I knew you'd come through! Wonder if there is any way that we could mark that chart (CTS) and keep it along with the 'Help us help you' type thingies at the top of the Auto Repair listings? Would be nice to have a seperate section where we could post stuff like that to refer back to. Loren SW Washington

It will only show up here as long as I keep it on the hosting site. it will eventually get deleted there. We could upload it as an attachment but it won't show up in the body.

Wonder if I could scan a chart, save to documents, then upload it? I can try. I do it with photos all the time. Found about 1000 photos in the attic, scanned every one of them, and put them in my photo software. Worked great. Loren SW Washington

Sure you can. It just won't show up in the body here. It's just the way the software is set up here. I'm uploading it here ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
