2000 Pontiac Sunfire cranks, no start, Theftlock Sign In

2000 Pontiac Sunfire, 92K miles

Slow cranked in November, jumpstarted it back to life right before Thanksgiving.. drove it home, hasn't started since.

Battery wouldn't take a charge from subsequent jumpstart attempts or battery charger. Replaced battery yesterday.

No problems powering lights, dash display, etc. with new battery... Engine cranks with new battery (it didn't with old battery). Still doesn't start... Service, check engine and oil lights on after trying to start as well as flashing Theft System light on dash. Radio display is 'LOCKED.'

Attempted key-in-ignition trick (wait 10 minutes for Theft System light to stop flashing, then try to start again) to disable Theftlock, does not work. Vehicle is not programmed with a 4- or 6-digit code, never was.

Fuel gauge shows a quarter of a tank of gas, although I suspect it may be less due to previous issues with gauge... Still, my best guess from last drive is there should be at least 3 gallons in the tank.

Does the 2000 Pontiac Sunfire prevent engine from starting because of Theftlock, or do I likely have starter/alternator issue?

Is the theft light still flashing or did it go out after doing the relearn????

Normally if it's an anti theft problem the engine will start and run for about 2 seconds and then die but I've seen some strange cases that doing the relearn the right way took care of....

The light eventually goes out, but the radio display remains locked. The engine never fully fires, just the cranking.

If the light isn't on or flashing then it probably isn't an anti theft problem....

Check for spark and fuel and if possible pull the codes and we'll go from there.......Post what you find, I'm going to be gone for a while but someone else will jump in when you post your results.....

You may have to do the 3 step relearn.

Disconnect the battery and hold the cables together for about 30 seconds then reconnect the cables before performing the procedure.Read it carefully if done incorrectly it won't work.If it helps let me know.
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).
Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes (the vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK).
Important
The vehicle learns the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
Start the engine (the vehicle has now learned the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or password).
With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed (history DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles).

I have spark, no issues there. Added two more gallons to the tank, gauge reads about 1/3 full, so amount of fuel should not be at issue either.

Have no method of getting engine error code short of towing the vehicle to a shop.

Have you done the complete relearn yet?

You could have more than one problem but you have to get that security light out before looking for anything else. If the relearn doesn't work, then you have a hard failure in the security system and you will need a Tech2 or equivalent scan tool and you may only find that at the dealer.
