ok my girlfriends 2000 ford focus 2.0 sohc with 120k miles on it was sitting in idle all of a sudden the cars idle was jumping from high to low idle, all of the gages jumped everywhere, and then stalled. car wouldnt turn over, it sounded like a dead battery but the raido and everything came on fine. no engine check light had to jump it off to get it to start, then shortly died. i had the altinator and battery tested and they are good. i charged the battery up again for about a day and it was running fine then i had it sitting in idle and again same thing. a little bit of a funny smell came from inside the car but not the engine. engine temp is fine oil pressuer is good. what is wrong with my car???????????????????????

Did you have the alternator tested IN THE CAR?

yes i think it might be something with the car jumping ground i just found out if you let the car sit for a min it starts back up. it might have bad grounds due to rust or vibs rattling them loose along the years. tell me if this sounds like it could be the answer?????????????? the battery doesnt loose its charge and also checked with volt meter the altinator recharges the battery. also checked the iacv but i dont think that is the problem

Sounds like you've got a connection problem somewhere. it could be a ground or it could be a power feed. You need to start at the battery and remove every cable and clean it and reinstall it. Follow all the cables to all the connections and wire brush every one. Those fords are pretty notorious for having bad connections that look clean.
