I have a 2000 Kia Sephia and I had the car inspected and was told I needed a new front-right half shaft and bearing & seals for both front. I would like to know in plain English what they are specifically. I am not the woman who brings my car to a mechanic to fix things, I do it myself. (Places like Firestone think Im stupid and like to try to rip me off). I looked up online how to replace them, but I cant seem to find anything. Can anyone give me a run down of what they are and how to replace them please? Thanks so much.-Donna p.s. If there are any Mechanics in Orlando, Fl that would be willing to assist us for cheaper than an actual mechanic shop, I would be willing to pay for parts and labor. They want almost $1000 for just those (parts and labor for the half shaft and the Bearings & Seals), and I was told I could cut that cost significantly if I did it myself. Something like up to but no more than $200 for parts. Please let me know. Thanks so much :)

a 1/2 shaft is just another term for an axle. Your car has 2, a left & right. It goes from the transmission to the wheels. The bearing are in the "hub" or "knuckle" of the front wheels. The axle goes thru the bearing that's in the hub and is secured with an axle nut, torqued to around 150 lbs (you need to look up the exact spec if you do this yourself). The bearing is pressed into the hub so to do the bearings, you would remove the hub and have a shop press the old ones out & new ones in. I volunteer Desi or Tom for the job.....

I won't have the money til the 26th, so we have a couple weeks to fight over who gets to do it Don't worry, that isn't going to happen A halfshaft or axle is just 2 C/V joints joined by a bar. The total assembly is called a halfshaft and they are changed as a complete unit.. Just a haha. Ok gotcha thank you.
