2001 mgzr 160 k-series overheating fault Sign In

hi guys i own a 2001 mgzr 160 k series 1.8 the car as suddendly started overheating after being parked for a week. basically whats happing is when the car temp gauge go,s to red the heaters are cold so taken to local garage who told me to start with thermostat. replaced thermostat with same problem so then changed water pump and radiator with still the same problem. we have noticed that if you drive the car at high revs in low gear the temp gauge goes down and heaters become warm indicating a circulation problem. i know this car is prone to headgasket failure but i have no sign of this in oil or water. also i have noticed that my coolant is been thrown back to the expansion tank filling it completely. I have taken all coolant pipes of and checked for blockage flushed engine but still same problem persists. I have owned this car for 6 years without problem the car has done 90k and hg was changed to the new mls type gasket with the metal shims about 3 years ago i am now baffled on my next move any advice on this would be great as all the garages i ask tell me that it is this and that i carnt keep throwing money at things that dont sort the initial problem.

Not a clue what this car is but doesn't matter as you have all the symptoms of exhaust/combustion gasses getting into cooling system. That can be checked for the fumes. Head gasket likely and they don't have to fail the same way all the time. Not always oil in coolant or coolant in oil etc. Gaseous vapors of any type where liquid belongs will not cool nor throw heat for your heater,

thanks for that tom. but just out of curiosty would you not get the smell of gases in the expansion tank coupled with small bubbles in the water. i have also had the test done on the water for exhaust gases and the mechanic told me there is a small indication of gases but he said its not that much and that it could be the system was not cleaned properly on the last hg change thats why he suggested doing things like thermostat and water pump and radiator. i have also noticed that the top coolant pipe to radiator feels empty and that when the pipe gets pressure its so much you carnt even squeeze the pipe at all. it does seem like there is a blockage in the block but hard to flush system properly just by the layout of the engine (need high pressure hose as both points of entry are near the top of the block with the pump at bottom ) but reluctunt to do this as this engine is aluminum and was told that high pressure could rupture the wall between water channel and oil channel.

Test for gaseous vapor for the fumes with whatever is available to you. Test strips or a machine I don't have and would get another shop to do but can diagnose those out 100% without but it is faster and more conclusive if the wrong gasses are found either in recovery tanks or in vapor under a radiator cap which in most systems should always be totally liquid.

Ordinary boil over from exactly heat alone for some other reason would not show the vapor. Gaskets and cracks in metals of head or anything sealing combustion pressures from the cooling system would be the cause,
