2002 Pontiac Sunfire EVAP problems

I bought this car in mid August from a private owner. Things seemed great, 2nd day everything started messing up. I had my R&R main seal replaced (or something like that) and after that my Engine Light came on. I had it for already a week before that repair but I took it back to the same repair shop I had the repair done and they said it was an EVAP problem and showed me a hose that wasn't hooked up to anything and then I was told the engine that was put in (previous owner before the owner I bought it from) was different then the manufactured one so one of the mechanics said he would call up some people to figure out something and now I'm being told that there is another hose that is not hooked up and can't even see it but he's telling me that they want to try to connect them together. Is that even the right way of doing it? I have bad gas mileage and I just want this problem fixed but either by myself or find someone who is willing to work on it but I need a start on to know what the problem may be
It's a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire SE 4DR 2.2L 4 cylinder, Automatic. Mileage is around 130,000 or more. I'll give a sepcific reading in the morning

If somebody put an incompatible engine in, there isn't much you can do about that.

Which 2.2L is in this vehicle DOHC or OHV? Look at the emissions sticker under the hood. It has a diagram of the EVAP system.

I don't really know, sorry. It doesn't say. There's the Air Filter thing on top of the engine, it says 2200 SFI. I'm not sure if that means anything. All I know is that the car has this engine: 2.2L I4 MPI Other then that I have no clue.
There is no emissions sticker under the hood. The thing I don't understand is that wouldn't the engine have to be compatible with the transmission for it to work properly? I know nothing about cars, that's why I ask. I wish I could give more information. I just need help and I'm sure with a different engine, there are still ways around that to connect for emissions even if things have to be added or connected somehow

Sounds like you have the LN4 2.2L OHV engine.
The sticker is located on the strut tower under the hood. There is an EVAP purge solenoid located underneath the intake bolted to the engine block. It is kind of a pain to get to, but the EVAP hoses probably go to that valve.

I seriously thought you took a picture of my car, lol. It's the same one though
Not to be a pain but can you like make a little diagram showing me what's what. I'd greatly appreciate if you are able to.
Is there anything wrong with this engine though? Is it a good engine?

Thank you so much
If i was to change out the engine, which engine would you recommend?
The mechanics i go to don't know crap, that's the reason why i searched for a site like this since no one seems to know what engine i had, knew nothing about the emission system and so on but thank you so much.

If you were to R&R the engine, you want to put the same year and size back into it. You could do an engine swap of a different engine, but that gets really expensive and there is a lot of fabrication involved. If you live in a state with emissions inspection, they don't think too highly of that.
