2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Recent History:

• ~135,000 miles

• Starter replaced 1.5 years ago (Pep Boys)

• Alternator replaced 6 mos ago (Pep Boys)

• After alternator replacement noticed light (headlight, interior) oscillation/surging indicating an uneven flow of electricity. Returned to Pep Boys who said their alternator/voltage regulator was fine.
o NOTE: No voltage issues (light symptoms) prior to alternator replacement

• Recently vehicle will not start (intermittently)
o Battery has been checked and leads cleaned.
Code said "communication problem with transmission"

Looking for any ideas as to how to fix this. I am afraid to drive anywhere for fear that it won't start to get me back home.

Thank you.

Voltage surging can be caused from a poorly grounded regulator inside the alternator. Make sure your engine grounds are good before condemning the alternator.

When you mentioned it doesn't start do you mean the engine cranks, but the engine won't start?

Re: 2003 Chevy Suburban Z71 Sign In

Thank you for your help. When the car won't start, the starter does not do anything--no cranking. I thought that it might have been the positive lead cable to the battery. I had shaken it a number of times when it would not start and the car would then start. That does not seem to be working anymore, so I guess I was off. We have been to an auto electrical mechanic 3 times and he is trying to help us figure something out, too. He just keeps saying to listen for any clues and keep bringing it back until it can be figured out. I appreciate his help, but am hoping to find out a solution sooner rather than later. It has been 3 weeks that we have been dealing with this intermittent non-starting issue. The last time in to the mechanic (2 days ago) is the first time that a code came up--It said something like "can not communicate with transmission".

How does the positive cable end look? If it is all corroded from the battery leaking all over it, it might need to be replaced. The terminal should be tight on the side post. You shouldn't be able to move it around. Sometimes the battery bolt strips out.

You should solve the cranking problem before going after the communications code.
