I HAVE A 2003 PONTIAC SUNFIRE WITH OVER 100,000 MILES ON 2.2 OHC MOTOR WAS RUNNING FINE YESTERDAY MORNING WHEN DROVE IT THEN DAUGHTER DROVE TO STORE WHILE RAINING HARD AND WENT THRU HEAVY PUDDLES THOUGHT MIGHT BE WATER ISSUE BUT SOUNDS LIKE IS ONLY FIRING ON 2 CYL INSTEAD OF 4 AND EXHAUST ONLY COMING FROM ONE TAIL PIPE DONT KNOW IF IS RELEVANT BUT TOOK TO AUTOZONE AND THEY GOT CODE THAT IT HAS MULTIPLE MISFIRES REPLACED SPARK PLUGS AS THEY SUGGESTED BUT DIDNT HELP WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE?

This system uses a type of waste spark system basically 1 coil fires 2 cylinders..... the pairs are 1&4, 2&3. So if the codes you got were P0301 & P0304 or P0302 & P0303 that would indicate one of the coils isn't firing. unfortunately you can't swap coils on this one to see if the problem moves...

Considering what happened I would probably be looking a connectors for signs of water, maybe taking some apart to see if there is any water in any of them.......... I suppose its possible for one side to go out but it sure seems coincidental considering what happened.......

By the way.... What codes did you get?
