The inside hood release latch/lever broke and I need to open the hood. There is a cable with a metal peg on the end of it that had attached to the release lever, I tried grabbing this peg with a pair of pliers and pulling on it, but this did not release the hood even when I pulled hard enough to rock the entire van back and forth. Is there a way to release the hood from the outside? I was able to get my fingers under enough to find the release that I would use once I had tripped the inside release latch but that did nothing since it had not had the original release to give that first inch of space. If anyone can suggest a way to pop the hood from the outside I would be most appreciative, thanks in advance!

This may have something to do with the reason the cable broke in the first place. If you can hold it in the release position while someone else pounds the front edge of the hood with the heel of their hand, not hard enough to dent the hood, just a "Fonzi" type strike, it may pop open. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

All I've got is try to spray a little PB Blaster under the hood where the latch is and have someone push down on the hood while you pull on the inside latch. Other than that, will the grill come out easy enough so you can access the hood lock ?

If the cable is still there, then you should be able to just grab it with a pair of vice grips and pull on it.

With HT on that. Seen plenty of older cars roll into the shop where the owners clamped on a small cheap vise grip and never bothered to replace the broken plastic. But if it ends up breaking under the hood later, its easy to take out the screws that hold the grill and grab it manually.

But if it ends up breaking under the hood later, its easy to take out the screws that hold the grill and grab it manually. Alright, so I had a pair of hands to help me out this morning and had the wife grab the hood lip and kinda shake while I tried the cable inside. First time, the metal tab on the end of the cable came off with no hood release. Second try with vise grips, a small section of cable tore off the end with no hood release. So now it looks like my option is to remove the front grill to get in there and manually release it. First question. The screws holding the grill in place have a non standard head. It is basically a 6 pointed star, just like a phillips head but with 6 points. What is this called, so I know what to ask for when I stop by a parts store to grab a driver to take them out. Second question. Where is the release going to be located? The latch to finish opening the hood is roughly in the center, but from the outside I cannot tell if the first stage release is behind/under that or elsewhere along the front of the hood. If anyone has any ideas of where I should be checking that would be great. Thanks for all the help thus far, much appreciated.

That's called a "Torx" head screw. Follow the cable to the end and you should see the release lever but it should have released from the other end so there may be a more serious issue with the latch itself.

When you get to the latch, look and see what the cable is connected to.

Got the torx and got the grill off. As it turns out the cable had actually come off disconnected from the latch at the end under the hood. So pulling the cable inside was doing nothing but pulling the peg at the end of the cable against the frame inside the hood. I was able to get it reconnected and such so it's all taken care of now. Thanks much for the direction and assistance, very much appreciated.

Glad you got it working. You really should get a new cable in there soon.

It's a Dodge Caravan. When do you ever have to open the hood? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I took my license test in a 93 Caravan. They're dependable until the trans goes boom but probably the easiest trans swap on a FWD I've ever done.

Your saying a 3.0L MMC engine is reliable? HAHAHA. You don't have to worry about the exhaust falling off because it gets lubricated by the engine. Just about all of them fog for mosquitoes. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Had the 3.3 in it. The MMC was a good boat anchor.
