My 94 Chevy Dulley was running fine, then no start. She is cranking fine and you can here it firing, but back fired once, then i kept trying to start it and am smelling gas. I think it might be a rotator cap or rotter problem? It is getting a spark, but just won't run [:/]

Should we guess whether this is a diesel or gas engine and which one? edit: I see now you mention spark. I'm giving you the complete sequence of tests you have to run. All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment. If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money. Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for. These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause. 1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on. 2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on. 3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off. 4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test. Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out, you will know which system is having the problem. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Pull a couple of spark plugs and see if it is flooded. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I suggest you follow the testing I supplied for you before trying the spot check guessing game.

Your list can be slightly modified. This is TBI, so you can look at the injectors to see if they are putting out fuel while cranking the engine. If you don't see fuel, then test pressure and injector pulse. If you see fuel spraying, check for spark at all plugs. Not just one plug because more than 3 and the engine won' run. If you have spark to all plugs, pull the plugs and see if any are flooded or wet. With the plugs out you can run a quick compression test. Also check the MAP sensor and make sure vacuum the line didnt get blown off. If there isn't any vacuum to the MAP, it will run rich as hell. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

If the injector trigger is grounded out, the injector will be spraying fuel as soon as the key is turned on. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Maybe yes, maybe not. It may not have sufficient fuel pressure without cranking. A noid light is the best method and there is no reason to advise otherwise.

Well, thanks for the help, drove it home today. It was my ignition coil, changed it and she fired right up! But now I have to take it to the muffler shop, the backfire blew one of my mufflers clean apart, LOL!!
