I am trying to help a friend with her 1996 Suburban with a 5.7 liter engine. The car will not start when it is completely cold (i.e. overnight) unless you give it a shot of starting fluid. Once it starts, it will continue to start fine unless it is again, completely cold. Any ideas?

That's a typical symptom of a bad fuel pump on a Vortec engine. That's a high pressure system and it requires a minimum of 55 PSI to run and starting cold is when the problem shows first.

Thanks for the info...is there a way to test the line pressure? I,m guessing that the the pump is in the tank and therefore a pain to replace.

The best way is to use a fuel pressure gauge. If you don't have a gauge you could try cycling the key from off to on about 4 or 5 times (leaving it in the on position for about 4 seconds each time), then try to start it. If it fires right up you are in the 85 to 90% range of a bad fuel pump.
