Vehicle: 1997 Mercury Sable GS 300cid single cam odometer: 200K Trouble: Car is driven short distances every day, recently replaced fuel pump, fuel regulator, autolite plugs, fuel filter, use plus gasoline. There is no check engine light with the engine running. Car runs great, however, at about 2000 miles after an oil change, sometimes the car will not start until I add about 3oz of STP and rinse it in with 10/30. I discovered this remedy about a year ago, have had it diagnosed at garages where they could find no fault, and have used the solution of adding STP about a dozen times. This car was meticulously cared for before I bought it at 125K and I have maintained it regularly since, adding at times duralube and STP trying to keep it running well. Is this just a case of the rings are completely worn out?

Did any of these garages do a compression test and a leakdown test? If so what were the results? By the way, this isn't a 300 cubic inch engine. Thats a straight 6. Your V6 is a 3 liter. No engine light and no pending codes are two different things. Not all codes set an engine light. Get it scanned and see what if anything comes up.
