Can someone help me figure out why my 97 Dodge Stratus 2.5 starts and dies. Does the crank sensor start the car and then it runs on the cam sensor or vice versa? Any ideas?

The engine computer needs the crank and cam sensor signal for the engine to start and run.

Is the check engine light on? If so, what code(s) are being stored?

Do you have any security lights on or flashing when you try to start it?

There are no codes and no security lights on. It starts and immediately dies. The fuel pressure showed it was a little low so I put a new fuel pump on it.

Oh yeah, and as long as you spray something in the intake it will run. I used brake clean yesterday and had the wife turn it on and it ran fine. I'm not a novice mechanic. I have 6 ASE certifications so you can get technical with me if you like. I just need any ideas.

Thanks.

Do you have a scan tool to monitor data stream information?

I used break cleaner because it's extremely flammable. The brand is Wearever Brake Parts Cleaner.

And no I don't have a good scanner that will monitor data stream information. Wish I did. The guy I worked for before moving home went bankrupt after 9 years of owning the business this past spring. Since then I have been working from home on odds and ends. I found this car for a good price but instead of junking it out thought I'd try to get it up and running. It looks great and could be a good car if I can solve this. I've built a garage and purchased a lift. But it will take a bit before I can afford other 'major' tools.

Thanks again.

If it runs on brake cleaner that means the crank sensor is working. Could be a cam sensor problem, but usually that will set a code. I believe on those if the cam signal is lost the computer can't fire the injectors in the correct sequence. Some vehicles will default to batch firing injectors, but I don't think Dodge could do that.

Do you have a multimeter, graphing multimeter, or lab scope? Did you check for injector pulse when it wouldn't start?

Yes, I have a multimeter and a graphing multimeter. I'll check that on Monday if I can get to it. I had a few cars dropped off today I have to get to first. Gotta pay the bills. LOL It looks like the distributor has been leaking oil through it. I thought it might be the cause. Thanks for the help. I'll get back to you on what I find.
