1998 GMC Sierra, 1/2 Ton, 5.7 Liter V8, 4WD. My A/C pressure switch on my truck is bad. In repairing this switch with a new one, will the Freon have to be drained? I didn't know if something like repairing this switch would deal with a pressure issue or not. If so, i guess the only way to have it repaired is in a shop? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If your referring to the cycling switch on the accumulator, it has a schraeder valve and will not require draining but if your talking about a high pressure switch on the compressor, then yes, that would require refrigerant recovery first. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I had the A/C drained and restored about a month ago. It has been working great, with no problems. Just yesterday, it stopped working. The clutch on the compressor will not start at all. I was told it is probabaly the pressure switch (probabaly the one on the compressor itself). Is this a common problem where it might actually be something aside from the switch?

It could be a ton of different things and really needs to be diagnosed properly. The only switch they have a lot of problems with it the low pressure switch on the accumulator. You can just unplug it and jump the wires together at the plug to test if the switch was the problem. Don't drive it jumped out though if the switch is bad.
