98 jeep dies, restarts, geeting worse.

My 1998 Jeep Grand cherokee, 6 cyl, auto trans, 4wd, 116,000 miles, more so before it gets warmed up good, will occasionally die like you turned the key off, but will usually restart. Is getting worse. Several months ago it started occasionally dying while idling, but now has died while driving. I was a mechanic years ago, but not very familiar with computer controlled cars. In past I have had similar problems with poor electrical connections, and tried wiggling the plug that goes into the computer from the engine. sometimes it will cause a misfire, or dying. Sometimes not. I cleaned the connector, and put a block of wood between the plug and radiator overflow tank to give a tighter fit, and it ran good for one day, then got worse. After the engine gets good and hot, it seldom happens. HELP! Weezer Sorry, forgot to add this. The OBD II scanner shows no codes.

Hmmm - If wiggling that plug instantly caused an issue it just may be THE issue. Connections all over are vibrating with the car so a weak one can act up in any dang way it wants. Worked properly for a day when cleaning was done is a strong clue you have the area of the trouble and probably should see what you can do to make it connect better not just a block of wood, T

Need to monitor crankshaft position sensor signal to see if it drops out before the engine stalls. Failing crankshaft position sensors is a common problem on those, but testing would verify if that is the case. Why are you using wood on a PCM connector? You have a terminal tension problem? Something broke on the connector? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Sorry for the slow return. Had an family emergency out of state I had to attend to. The block of wood was to get a tighter fit at the connection, which worked. the connector didn't have a very tight fit. I tried to crimp the female pin connectors somewhat, but the connectors are very small, and the molded plastic was too hard. So I cleaned the connectors, checked with my son-in-law who is an electrician, put a dab of powdered graphite (an electrical conductor) into the female connectors, and used some dielectric paste. Put it back together, and so far, it is working great. Thanks for the quick responses I was given. I'll report back later to let you know if it is still working. I hope the crank sensor doesn't turn out to be bad. That looks very difficult to get to. Weezer
