hello , im trying to change the thermostat on my 1999 chevolet malibu,3100 v6 code m engine with 65000 miles on it. I ve located the thermostat housing and found out there is not alot of room to work. My question is should I be able to remove the bolts in housing with a socket wrench or will I need to remove another part prior to get in at it.I know its a stupid question but I dont want start taking a whole lot of stuff apart just to fix a little ole thermostat.Instructions on how to do this would be great as its my only ride and I dont have a lot of money

At a glance this is fairly straight forward. Do remove whatevers in the path of getting to the two bolts that hold housing. Make sure you install in correct position and because this one is mounted on its side do what you must such that it doesn't fall out of place while fastening up housing. Just curious: Why are you replacing it - for what symptoms? T *********************** 3.1L Engine - Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Drain the cooling system, into a suitable container, to a level below the thermostat housing.
- Remove the air cleaner assembly.
- Remove thermostat housing-to-intake manifold attaching bolt and nut, then remove the housing.
Remove the two housing-to-intake manifold bolts and remove the housing - Remove the thermostat.
To install: - Clean all gasket surfaces completely.
- Insert the thermostat in the intake manifold.
- Attach the thermostat housing to the intake manifold.
- Install the mounting bolt and nut. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
- Install the air cleaner assembly.
- Connect the surge tank line to thermostat housing.
- Refill the cooling system.
- Connect the negative battery cable, remove the radiator cap, then start the engine. Allow the engine to run with radiator cap removed, until the upper radiator hose becomes hot (thermostat open). With the engine idling, add coolant to the radiator until the level is up to the bottom of the filler neck.
- Install the radiator cap, making sure the arrows line up with the overflow tube.

Running hot and not getting heat: That's why I asked - it's not the thermostat IMO! Boiling coolant/ or just water won't throw heat! First you need to verify coolant level is full. If this is a first cold snap for you then I have to ask if the anti-freeze concentration is adequate? 50/50 mix is the common requested strength. 99 cent ball testers work fairly well and close enough for most. This may not use a cap on the radiator itself which makes knowing it's full a pill. Gotta squeeze upper hose and look for bubbles at the recovery tank is one clue rad is truely full - when cold/cool and no pressure evident. Hit back if you can't figure it out, T
