[crazy]My 1999 Dodge Durange V8 has ABS brakes and all of a sudden when I have to make a sudden stop, the brakes lock and I skid. The ABS light has never come on to say there is a problem. Stopping normally, the brakes seem ok. Why is it doing this and what is the problem?

Re: ABS brakes not working Sign In

when you first start the truck does the ABS light illuminate and turn off after a second or two??

if it doesnt illuminate when you start the truck.....the bulb might be dead and you really do have a ABS code stored all this time...

or

the abs controller isnt working

You should have the entire base brakes checked; making sure that there isn’t a mechanical reason for the brakes to lock.
ABS systems control or attempts to control brake lock-up by releasing hydraulic pressure to the wheels.
Seizing calliper or wheel cylinder, worn or contaminated friction material (oil or brake fluid soaked brake pads & shoes) all could add up to a mechanical reason that a wheel(s) will lock, that releasing hydraulic pressure will not overcome.
I guess what I’m saying is, make sure that all the basics are in proper working order.

If base brakes are ok then we’ll need to know what dmac asked, along with a code reading of the ABS system’s controler.
