Brakes went out Sign In

Please help! I was driving down the street today and I went to press on my brake and it hits the floor with NO resistance. My car had been lagging before that and they didn't feel 100% before this happened. I go to grab my emergency brake and it's on. I'm blaming this on one of the kids. So I put it down, then pulled it back up to slow down and pull into a driveway. My brakes work a little with the emergency brake, but not at all on their own. I had to use the emergency brake on and off until I got to the closest shop I knew of.

After inspecting the car, the only thing they told me was my front and back brake pads needed to be replaced and my front rotors were worn out. I've never had any grinding or squeeling - no noise at all. They said that doesn't mean anything. Against my better judgement, I've left my car there to have those things done. I pressed them for a while and they finally threw in the Brake Hoses needed to be replaced as well. What?! It's as though they weren't going to mention that at first.

I think I've been ripped off and I'm terrified to get my car back and go anywhere with my kids. Anyone have any idea what might really be wrong with my car?

Sudden loss of braking like that is usually a hydraulic problem - loss of brake fluid. A warning light should have lit - same one that tells you the parking brake is on that must be out or you ignored it.

Brakes are separated into two parts so when a failure in one might happen 1/2 still works but feels like about nothing. A brake hose could do this alone. Fluid would be low or empty in at least that part of the master cylinder.

It may have needed the brakes all around but that rarely happens all at once. It can if friction lining falls off but you would get a nasty grind with a few tries even when that happens.

Ask to look at your old parts if you are concerned or take them with you,

Thanks, I will! I would think they would have mentioned I was low on brake fluid. I specifically asked about the master cylindar and the guy said they checked it and it was fine...I think I'm going to be in an accident when I leave there with my car tomorrow, or soon. I don't think they know what to do, so they just made something up to do something...
