1993 Mercury Marquis 4.6 auto 93,000 miles. Mechanic read codes stated egr issue removed and cleaned it replaced pdfe? Okay for about a week then check engine light returns, been back to mechanic three times with this issue he reset and it might be okay for a day or so . Yesterday replaced pdfe? again thinking the last one may be defective. It took about 30 minutes for the check engine light to come on again. Can someone help me help my mechanic fix this problem? He is puzzled and stated he would have to call around for info that would resolve this matter Help. Thanks

If you could post the exact code you are getting that would be helpful. While the DPFE valve is common failure part on Fords it's not the only thing that can give you an EGR code. I'm not sure what tests have been run so far. One of the 1st would be to hook a vacuum pump up to the EGR valve to make sure the valve is good and the port itself isn't clogged. Sounds like he may have done this already. If he isn't familiar with the system most data bases have flow charts for codes that will walk you thru the diagnostic process for that code....

If your getting a "low flow" code PO401, there is a common problem on that engine where the EGR passage gets plugged up with carbon. You'll have to remove the intake elbow on top of the manifold with 4 bolts and the passage will be right there.

Hammer, he has a 93. That is EEC IV. Probably a 332 or 336. Same repairs apply though.
Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

Thanks for all the replies mechanic talked to someone at local Ford place they stated on my vehicle that the intake had to come off for carbon cleaning. He wants $300 to r&r intake plus cleaning and gasket. I will have to put up with the light. Thanks again.

You can do the repair yourself. It is a simple thing to do. Let us know and we can post the procedures for you. You might have to buy a gasket and a can of carburetor cleaner.

Way2old is right. It's simple, just 4 little bolts and a couple pieces of linkage.

Here you are. Short and sweet. The passageswill be obvious once you pull the throttle body. Carburetor cleaner and a small screwdriver works wonders. Try to be careful not to allow too much carbon to drop down in the passages or the in take.
Section 03-04: Fuel Charging and Controls—4.6L 1993 Town Car/Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis Workshop Manual REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
Throttle Body
Removal - Disconnect throttle position sensor and throttle linkage at the throttle lever.
- Remove four throttle body retaining bolts.
- Carefully separate air throttle body from intake manifold adapter.
- Remove and discard gasket between throttle body and adapter.
Installation
NOTE: If scraping is necessary, be careful not to damage gasket surfaces or allow material to drop into manifold. - Clean gasket mating surfaces.
- Install throttle body , new gasket and the four bolts to the adapter.
Tighten retaining bolts to 8-11.5 Nm (6-8.5 lb-ft).
Connect throttle position sensor and throttle linkage.

The mechanic has done this procedure but the Ford Dealer mechanic says the whole intake has to come off. Don't know what to do. Thanks

Not for EGR purposes it doesn't.

We have done this repair over 100 times and never had to remove the intake. Just need to remove the throttle body.
Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds
