Cutlass Ciera Help PLEASE ITS URGENT Sign In

Hi

I have a 94 cutlass ciera and it is acting up alot... at random times it will refuse to turn over..it will make the noise but it wont turn over..it shows the charge battery light but then it dissapears..it will workf or a while then it will not work at all again...yesterday i went out to it and it made a loud turnover noise when it was working..then it like died. I went out 6 hrs later and it worked again..today it has worked i have tried to turn it on twice..i didnt drive it at all todayb ut both thimes i tried it turned over with no problem...i cant afford diognostics so im going to have to fix it myself... does this sound like the coil, the alternator, or starter switch, or battery (i dont think thats it cause it makes a loud noise still)

thank you so much
nate

I would start with the basics. Make sure the battery terminals are clean & tight. Get the battery tested. Put a voltmeter on the battery when the car is running & the light is on and see what the voltage is reading, should be between 13.5 & 14.7.

Not really sure what you mean by a "turnover noise". No guesses on that one...........

i mean that it makes the noise like a revved up sound when it turns on and then like makes a release sound and starts the regular noise that a car makes when it runs

Nate; When you say it 'turns over', do you mean that the engine cranks, but it won't start? If so, we need to determine if it is lacking spark to the spark plugs or lacking fuel to the injectors. What engine is this? 4 or 6? What size engine?

Nate; I understand your frustration, but we need to know if you are lacking spark or fuel when it won't start.

Re: Cutlass Ciera Help PLEASE ITS URGENT Sign In

Hmmmmmm. A total guess going off the limited info, almost sounds like the bendix is weak in the starter & not kicking in some times....If the starter is freewheeling it will make a high reving sound due the rpms it's spinning at because of no load on it...............

Nate; This is where diagnostics come into the picture. You'll need a spark tester to see if you are getting spark to the plugs during crank, when the problem arises. Also, a noid light to see if you are getting injector 'pulse'. Then, a fuel pressure guage to see if you are getting adequate pressure to the injectors.

Both, spark tester and noid lights, are very inexpensive and available at most parts stores.

Re: Cutlass Ciera Help PLEASE ITS URGENT Sign In

You know Loren I was thinking the same on the symptoms...

Nate could you clairify the problem...... The battery light on while running I got.

Is this just a intermitten cranking problem with a noise or is the engine actually dying while the running??

Re: Cutlass Ciera Help PLEASE ITS URGENT Sign In

the way it seems is tht when i try to turn it over the charge battery light will b on..but if it fully turns over and i can drive it... the light will go away and when its running the battery works fine..but when it wont work the battery sounds loud and then quickly drops to a low noise..then dies..idk if that helps

The battery sounds loud? That is interesting. You may want to take this to a garage to have it diagnosed. Loud batteries can be a serious problem.
