Dodge Air Conditioner Compressor Sign In

I have an '01 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.3 125k was making a noise that a local mechanic said it is the Air Conditioner Compressor and it's a big job like $1250 job! I told him I didn't need it that much (Wisconsin) and asked if it was not needed and he stated there is an "elimination kit" for some vehicles?? any comments??

There are very few vehicles that offer that kit. You would have to check your local parts store to determine if they do. It consists of an idler pulley that mounts where the compressor would normally be.

Loud SQUEELING noise?

If so, it's the serpentine belt. After spending a small fortune, here's my story.

A/C CLUTCH worn out causing poor performance of idler pulley. Fix A/C clutch by putting new one on old compressor. Make sure it is done correctly and spaced/gapped correctly so serpentine belt stays true.

If you do this yourself do not mess up on gapping/spacing of idler pulley when put back.

Professional Mechanic/shop will take well under 1 hour to complete start to finish. That's part (get yourself it's cheaper) plus maximum of 1 hour labor. Or else they're thieves.

Re: Dodge Air Conditioner Compressor Sign In

That's not always the answer. Many clutches fail due to pressure problems or internal compressor problems. When the clutch slips, it causes extreme excessive heat which normally takes out the front compressor seal cause total compressor replacement in the near future. In general, replacing clutches is not a good idea and can end up being money wasted in the end.
