Engine knock at 2000 RPM in park Sign In

1996 Ford Thunderbird LX
V6 3.8L Engine 140,000 Miles

Hi, I know very little about cars so I was hoping could point me in the right direction for a problem I'm having. I have no problems whatsoever while driving the car. When it is in park or neutral the engine makes a knocking noise starting at 2000 RPM and immediately stops making that noise at roughly 2500 RPM and above. Car sounds and runs fine at all other times. It had been awhile since it had it's oil changed and was just done yesterday. I heard it could be something from gunky buildup, carbon buildup, or something worse like a rod or something. If anyone could perhaps give me suggestions I would appreciate it.

Unfortunately, noises like that are next to impossible to diagnose without actually hearing them. Does is sound like a hard, solid, type knock, or a tinny type? Best thing to do is to have a mechanic get it up on a lift and listen with a stethescope. It could be that above 2500rpm you just aren't hearing it due to speed related noise or other engine noise. This is not something that you want to ignore, of course.

Agreed - totally worth a pro's attentions and appraisal. This could be a silly as a loose plug or something cheaper and better done sooner,

You could take the serp belt off & see if that makes a difference.....Just don't run it to long with out the water pump...... That would at least tell you if it's in the accessory/balancer area......
