Exhaust problem Sign In

I just replaced my exhaust system in my car one week ago. The straight pipe was broken and needed to be replaced. I've been driving my car for a week now and it's making a rumbling sound when I start it and when I turn the ignition off, it sounds like it's gargling....can anyone tell me what this could be? 2004 alero 177000 kms

Re: Exhaust problem Sign In

Guess is that noise was there and being masked by exhaust noise. Were original parts used for exhaust in proper locations?

Only couple things I can think of right now that can make noises when car is shut off is boiling coolant or sometimes A/C refrigerant in some cars makes a noise equalizing pressures can be heard. Even if you haven't been using A/C is comes on with defrost request. Perhaps try unplugging compressor and see if noises go away - best guess I can muster for now?

Yes, original parts were used.
I haven't used my ax is a long time....it actually doesn't work...
I took it back to the mechanic...hopefully it is the ac and not anything that will cost too much. Thanks for your reply

Re: Exhaust problem Sign In

If A/C is down and compressor doesn't ever come on that's not it and it's just a pulley in the belt system and some cars it must be in place for belt(s) to work/fit.

Funny noises like that might have to be witnessed so glad you are taking it back to your mechanic,

PS: One thread is enough for same issue so removed the other............

Re: Exhaust problem Sign In

Does this thing have a catalytic converter on it? Every time I read or hear the words "straight pipe" that means someone hacked off the converter.
