The straight pipe was broken and needed to be replaced. I've been driving my car for a week now and it's making a rumbling sound when I start it and when I turn the ignition off, it sounds like it's gargling....can anyone tell me what this could be? 2004 alero 177000 kms Tom Greenleaf Ultimate Carjunky / Moderator Apr 28, 2012, 7:09 AM Post #2 of 5 (1650 views) Re: Exhaust problem Sign In Guess is that noise was there and being masked by exhaust noise. Were original parts used for exhaust in proper locations? Only couple things I can think of right now that can make noises when car is shut off is boiling coolant or sometimes A/C refrigerant in some cars makes a noise equalizing pressures can be heard. Even if you haven't been using A/C is comes on with defrost request. Perhaps try unplugging compressor and see if noises go away - best guess I can muster for now? Funny noises like that might have to be witnessed so glad you are taking it back to your mechanic, T PS: One thread is enough for same issue so removed the other............ Every time I read or hear the words "straight pipe" that means someone hacked off the converter.
