Faulty Ignition Switch or Key Cylinder ? Sign In

Hi,

I have a Ford Focus 2003 and have starting problems. Starter has been tested and is fine. The key turns perfectly in the cylinder but does not always start the car. I have to try starting it for a couple of minutes before it starts.

Also, I need to turn the key fully to the start position and bring it back very slowly to the position where it usually starts.

The mechanic has isolated the problem to be either the key cylinder or the ignition switch and will attempt to change both of them when only one of them is faulty.

Where does the problem lie ? Is the ignition switch faulty or the key cylinder ?

Thanks for your help.

Sounds like the ign switch . There is a number of TSB's related to the switch which leads me to think it may have a high failure rate.

From your description, I would also guess the switch. Since you can move the key back and it will start at a certain point, it is probably the switch. If it were the key cylinder, moving it back would not have any effect on it.
