How to troubleshoot Cruse Cointrol, 97 lesabre Sign In

 I have a 1997 Buick LeSabre. The cruise control stopped working. When I set it, the "Cruise" Light comes on the dash, but the cruise doesn't work.

1. What is the usual, or most likely thing that goes out on cruise?

2. How do you troubleshoot Cruise on a 1997 LeSabre? I don't know where to start.

A maybe to check: Anything fall off or disconnected at the throttle body??

check to make sure your brake light switch is functioning properly also. since the cruise is deactivated when you apply the brakes, its just another component to rule out.

Not sure what you mean. My break lights work. Is that what you mean?

your brake lights come on and off?

not sure on your particular application. but there may or may not be 2 "limit" switches on the brake pedal travel. one is the brake light switch and there may or may not be a second limit switch on the top end of the pedal travel indicating the brake pedal is fully released.

in either case, climb under the dash and make sure the switch is adjusted propely. make sure when the pedal is fully released the "brake light switch" doesnt have any tension on the plunger. it should be just barely touching the pedal to insure prompt brake light illumination but the spring shouldnt be compressed.

then like tom mentioned check your throttle body, that the cable is still attached and not binding

To add...

Check that the Center High Level Stop Lamp (one in the back window) is operating too..if it isn't that can stop the cruise from functioning on this model..

If not ,have the system scanned for trouble codes and post them...

 I checked everything posted in this thread, all checked out OK. No codes stored also.
We looked at the break pedal switches and they where in the right position. I even drove down the road with up presser on the pedal.

One thing I thought of when doing that was if the pedal resting on the switch was making the car think the breaks where on, the "cruse" light wouldn't come on.

I don't know what, but the fact that the "curse" light comes on, can narrow down some things as not being the problem.

If you can think of the next things to check, let me know. Thanks for the replys,
