My 1997 Mercury Cougar, XR7, 4.6 LT, V-8, 148000 MI, Idles at 2000 RPM, and when engaged in Drive it runs up to 40 MPH without accelerating. Please advise. Thank you, Grandpacisco.

Is the check engine light coming on at all? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I have been driving the cougar with the engine light on, for about thre years. I spent near $ 3000 dollars between dealers an small shop mechanics, and the engine light is still coming on

Wow.....I really don't have a good answer for that.... As far as you high idle, those had a problem with the IAC motors, the diaphram would split causing a high idle... As quick check, take the iac off ( 2 bolts), block off both ports with cardboard & put the iac back on, if it now idles too low & almost dies, the problem is in the circuit or bad motor.............
