well, when i bought this car it only had three wheel studs on the front left tire. i drove it this way for roughly 9 months before it started to cause me any problems. now, it is broke down in my drive, with another broken stud and one of them stripped. the one that is stripped, isnt stripped on the threads. the teeth on the back of it that hold it into the hub are stripped. i backed the lug nut about half way off before it wouldnt move anymore and just spun with the wheel stud. i have tried justabout everything i can think of the break the stripped stud, however nothing has worked. if anyone has any ideas or knows how to fix this problem please reply asap. the engine is a 1.5l 4CYL with roughtly 135000 miles.

Well, since the hub is 'trashed', the damage is already done. If you have access to a compressor, an impact chisel is the easiest way to "split" the lug nut. A hammer and a flat cold chisel is another way, but a real job. Of course, either way, you'll have to extra careful to not damage the wheel, but if it has been running with loose lug nuts, it's probably 'trashed' as well. Good luck. Loren SW Washington

welli dont know if the hub is trashed or not. as far as i know its just the wheel stud itsself that is stripped. i think this because when i was trying to replace the broke one, the teeth on the back of the new stud stripped out. i was thinking maybe drilling through the stud? would that weaken it enough to break it so i can get my wheel off to fix it?

The serations on the stud hold it from turning in the hub. The studs are pressed into the hub. Once it spins, it damages the hub. The replacement stud can be welded into the hub, but for safety purposes, you should replace the hub. Drilling the stud is not a bad idea! Start with a small 'pilot' hole, then work your way up in size until you are nearly to the diameter of the stud. Should work. Good idea! Loren SW Washington

Should be pretty obvious to the naked eye. Also, the new stud will 'just' push into the hole when it should have to be pressed in, taking a lot of force. Loren SW Washington

Hmmm? I think the hub will be rendered trash - aggree with Loren the welding a new one on isn't a good idea - heat and metal strenghth will be reduced. Perhaps since this one that came part way out will think about re-tightening again?? Can you hold the pop rivot looking back of the wasted stud or pry on it inwards such that it grabs again and then overtighten the sucker and break it! Some times when something is a "hole thru" idea it's easier to break the bolt tightening then trying to undo it. There are several exhaust and shock absorber places that I always found easier to break from tightening (with a box a new stuff waiting of course) then fussing with undoing them - that was a rust issue - this is a pressed in spline into hub that should take lots of force for a new one to seat into hub or it will just fail also, T

i cant tighten it back down, the bolt is just spinning regardless wether i am tighening or loosening the lug nut.
