Mustang water from tailpipe! Sign In

About three months ago I bought a 98 Ford Mustang Convertible (a really great looking car) it has a 4.6 L V8 with about 156,000 miles. I know why would someone buy a car with that many miles. Because of the recession I was without a vehicle for almost three years. In my price range there wasn't a big selection to choose from. I noticed water coming from the tailpipe yesterday. Quite a bit of water, like a fast dripping faucet. I drove it about a block today to see if it leaked again and it did. I've read the posts and I honestly hope it doesn't mean it HAS to be the head gasket. I'm hoping someone will tell me it could be something minor. I do not have the money to
take it to a shop. If responding please know that I am a retired grandmother and not a mechanic. Thank you.

Gram, water from the tailpipe can be a normal byproduct of condensate. The mileage you have on it isn't that outragous either. My truck has over 260000 on it and still on the original motor. What you need to worry about is if you have while smoke in the exhaust and overheating of the engine. That indicates a bad head gasket. If its just a drip out of the muffler and you aren't loosing coolant or overheating I doubt you need to worry. If you need to have your mind put at ease, call a local tech college and talk to the teacher of the auto program. They could look at it and give you their opinion and it would be free. But you would have to work around their class schedule, as its a teaching school not a production shop. As a retiree your schedule may be flexible enough to work around that.

By the way, nice choice of car. Beats my grandma's Oldsmobile any day.

Thanks for the advice and taking the time to respond. Yea, it is a hot looking car....nice bright red paint too. It does get me quite a few looks. Unfortunately, I realize most people are probably thinking what's that old gal doing driving a car like that. That's alright, it makes me feel a few years younger when I'm driving it and the wind is blowing through my gray hair. LOL

When you beat them to the next stoplight just smile and tell them they drive like your grandma.

Grandma - you go girl. Water if just water is probably condensation/condensate as Nick said and can be quite a bit depending on weather conditions, more exhaust parts than some other vehicles to warm up. It also could be from an aggressive cleaning of the car before you bought it gone a bit far.

Guilty as charged I've put water in tailpipe with a garden hose (just being a fool) just to muffler some and watch it spray out - was a stupid thing to do on an old clunker but it took quite a while to finish pushing all the water out!

It should quit that with a longer run over time. If just from cold most will cease when fully warmed up. Check fluid levels as you should in anything but this could be normal,

T
