Noise under hood Sign In

Good morning! I have a 2000 Toyota Corolla, VE. 87000 miles. this car has been very good to me. I try to take very good care of it.

Here is my problem. About two weeks ago my car started to make a noise under the hood. I took it to the repair shop and at first they thought it was an exhaust problem...under the Hood? and the service person advised I needed a new serpentine belt. found that strange, because had a new one about 5 years ago..but agreed to have the work done. So, after the work was completed i started the car and the same noises were present. Talked to the service manager who then told me I needed a power steering pump, probably did not need the belt. So, he had to set up an appointment with me to do that. the next morning when I started my car, after the belt before the pump, A noise came from under my hood to the right. I advised them of that and they said they would take care of it when I came for the pump. Took the vehicle in for the pump and had that done, the next day the muffler fell off my car and they fixed that, but the noise is still under the hood, on a cold start. So, I was told that if I dropped it back off they would replace the belt, maybe that was the problem. Well I dropped the car off and they said they could not duplicate the noise so they sprayed the belt. When I picked it up the service person walked me out to the car and low and behold the sound came forward when I started the car and he said, "oh, that, you probably need a new starter. Is any of this work related? and do you think the belt and the starter have anything todo with each other and HELP>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> thank you.

It's really really hard to diagnose a problem noise from a keyboard. All I can think to say is the starter should only make noise when it is cranking the engine. If it makes noise after the engine starts, it is hanging up or the bendix is stuck. z

would the replacement of the belt (serpentine) have anything to do with the starter? and if the belt is not installed correctly would it have a rubbing sound when I start my vehicle...thanks for getting back to me>

Re: Noise under hood Sign In

your belt has nothing to do with the starter. Unfortunately, parts do wear out and your car is 10 years old. Glad to hear you take care of it. Many people don't. But even if a complete idiot put on a belt in the wrong way or didn't even put it on at all it has no way whatsoever to affect your starter. They are on different ends of the engine. Let us know what becomes of this

Re: Noise under hood Sign In

Original post mentioned the noise underhood and an exhaust part in back falling off so it's telling of exhaust condition. Heat shields, and the connections where exhaust needs to flex or may use a funky flex pipe up front can give spitting exhaust noises if that fits. The shields can rattle like all hell broke loose or assorted noises if rusted,
