Rear Main Seal Shot

My son has a VW Golf that's about 15+ years old. He took it in for an oil change about two weeks ago, and today his car was totally out of oil. He brought it in to the place, and they said that the rear main seal was shot, and that's why the oil was leaking. The cost to repair would be more than the car is worth. I'm just wondering, since this happened right after they changed the oil; and since the rear main seal is near the oil plug: is it possible that they damaged the seal when they changed the oil? Just seems like kind of a coincidence that this happened right after they did an oil change. They say that there was a problem with the manifold, which, according them, probably heated up and caused the seal to go. (They had mentioned this problem with the manifold in the past, but it didn't seem like an urgent repair, so it wasn't done.) Does that seem likely? Thanks for any input! Neil

Neil; No, there is no way they could have damaged the rear main seal. It goes around the rear end of the crankshaft and is not accessable without removing the transmission. The seal is fairly easy to replace once the trans. is removed, though. Loren SW Washington

Thanks for the reply. That's good to know. You say it's fairly easy to replace. What would you estimate it would cost (rough ballpark)? < $500? < $1000? < $1500? They said it would cost more than the car is worth, so I'm just wondering. Maybe a transmission shop would be cheaper? Thanks!

I would 'guess' that the labor would be in the $500-$700 range. We don't do Euro vehicles, so just a guess. Loren SW Washington

To add he said it is easy to replace AFTER the trans is removed. Removal of the trans on the other hand is not real easy. $1500 may be a bit high but it depends on the labor charge per hour and what else is included in the job. Jeff

Yeah, I was kinda ignoring that "remove transmission" part. :-) Thanks.
