Regal Steering isuues

1996 Buick Regal Gran Sport 3.8 Series II 165000 kilometers Hello, I changed the power steering pump on my mom's Regal this morning, it was leaking badly. I didn't realize that it had the variable speed steering, I put in another pump w/o the vss valve, as that appeared to be where the leak was coming from. Anyway, the steering seems to work fine, but the speedometer doesn't work now, and the transmission won't shift properly. I assume that this is due to the vss sensor not being there. Does anyone know if I can bypass the vss sensor somehow without adding another sensor? If not, where I can buy a new sensor. I am in Vancouver, Canada.

Canada? DanD where are you, eh? The vehicle speed sensor is not there? That explains the driveability problems. I don't know what you have for parts houses in Canada, but I usually get the VSS right from GM. If you have a CAP or an Auto Zone they should have them, any store that sells Standard or Car Quest parts will also be able to get one for you. Steve

Not related to the fix but Steve - I'm near certain CAP (Consumer Auto Parts) is local and not a large chain. There are two near me! T

Do you have an O'Reillys? They have that pump for about $120.

psamp48, in re-reading your post I realized you're talking about the variable speed steering. That is not the VSS, the VSS is the vehicle speed sensor mounted on the transmission output shaft. This is the most likely problem with the speedo and the transmission shift problem. Steve

Thanks, but last time I checked, Vancouver is still nowhere near Boston, Mass.

Yes, I have figured out that the variable speed steering sensor is causing the problems, probably DTC 43. Does anyone know if I can bypass the sensor by plugging in the old sensor without putting it inline, i.e.- just completing the circuit, or will the lack of fluid pressure cause problems. As I said in my original post, the fluid was leaking from the sensor. Is the Rack different with the variable pressure, or will it work alright without the varying pressure. I have talked to some people who say that they just do away with their variable speed steering because of problems, but I am not sure how this will affect the computer.

I plugged in the old sensor off of the old power steering pump, also discovered that the VSS sensor plug was loose , set code 502, so now all is well.
