SILVERADO 4X4 STARTER REMOVAL
I HAVE AN '01 SILVERADO 1500 4X4 W/5.3L. I AM TRYING TO REPLACE THE STARTER. I HAVE IT LOOSE, BUT...CAN'T GET IT DOWN TO REMOVE THE WIRING. IN ONE PLACE-EHOW-IT SAID TO-ON 4X4'S-TO REMOVE THE NUT TO THE AXLE BOLT & SLIDE THE BOLT OUT TO THE END OF THE THREADS, BUT...NOT TO REMOVE IT. I BELIEVE THE FRONT END HAS HAD SOME WORK DONE ON IT. THE BOLT THRU THE ALUMINUM-LOOKING PART IS INSERTED FROM THE STARTER SIDE THRU THIS PART THRU THE A-ARM-W/NUT ON O/S-WHEEL SIDE-OF TRUCK. THIS BOLT-HEAD IS STOPPING THE STARTER FROM PASSING DOWN OFF THE ENGINE. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS? IF I WERE TO REMOVE THE BOLT...HOW DIFFICULT WOULD IT BE TO REPLACE? OR IS THAT A RECCOMMENDED OPTION? THERE IS A WIRING CLUSTER @ THE END OF THE STARTER THAT IS IN THE WAY OF STARTER MOVEMENT. IT LOOKS LIKE WIRING TO THE STARTER. I CAN'T GET TO THE WIRING TO LOOSEN IT WHILE STILL UP BESIDE OF THE BLOCK. THANX.

THANX FOR YOUR REPLY. I WAS TOLD THE STARTER HAS BEEN REPLACED WHEN I BOUGHT THE TRUCK. APPARENTLY THE JERKS-WORKING IN THE SHOP-DON'T KNOW/CARE TO REPLACE PARTS WHEN REASSEMBLING-AFTER A REPAIR. THERE IS NO TRANSMISSION COVER ON THE TRANSMISSION ON THIS TRUCK. I DON'T KNOW HOW ONE CAN REMOVE THE WIRING FROM THE BATTERY & THE WIRE TO THE SOLENOID...WHEN...ONE CAN'T GET TO THEM FROM UNDERNEATH. DOES THIS HAVE TO BE DONE THRU THE FENDERWELL? I HAVE ALWAYS REMOVED STARTER BOLTS....REMOVED STARTER FROM ENGINE...HELD STARTER IN ONE HAND & USED A 1/8" RATCHET ASSEMBLY TO REMOVE NUT FROM SOLENOID & 3/8" DRIVE FOR THE BATT. NUT...THEN CARRIED STARTER TO SHOP BENCH. THERE HAVE BEEN TIMES WHEN I COULD ROTATE THE STARTER-ON ENGINE TO DO THIS. IS THERE ANY INSTRUCTIONS ON THE BEST METHOD TO REMOVE THE WIRING/BATT CONNECTOR NUT? THERE IS ABOUT A 4 X 8" OPENING INSIDE THE FENDERWELL WHERE THE FRONT END OF THE STARTER CAN BE SEEN. THANX

Re: SILVERADO 4X4 STARTER REMOVAL

i searched and read this thread before attempting to change my starter. The post regarding working through the fender well is spot on. I got the starter loosened from the engine fine, but could not move it forward to let it drop down to where i could remove the wires. So i pulled the front right wheel and then removed the plastic fender liner. At that point there was just barely enough room to reach in with a quarter drive ratchet and remove the solenoid wire and battery terminal wire. Then the starter would slide forward enough to drop down and remove. Heres a tip on removing the fender liner. It is held in place with a two part plastic fastener. Pry the center of this fastener out first and then the entire fastener last. If you pry out the entire fastener at once you will for sure ruin them. steve
