Truck wont go over 45mph

92 ford ranger automatic I'm not sure what the engine size is because my buddy dose'nt no this is his truck but he says it wont go no faster than 45mph when its floored and he also says that he has to let go of the gas at 35mph he has to let it shift into the next gear to me it sounds llike its time for a new transmission. (PLEASE HELP)

can he count the shifts? maybe he lost a gear

Could be partially restricted catalytic converter. You can remove the oxygen sensor from the exhaust and test drive to see if your power is restored. (leave the sensor plugged in so you don't set a trouble code). Of course, there are other possiblities as well. Plugged fuel filter, ect. The transmission is electronically controlled by the PCM, so if the engine isn't running right, the trans shifting can be affected.
