Vehicle Speed Sensor malfuction code

2001 Nissan Pathfinder Four Wheel Drive Automatic 62000 miles The other day my speedometer stopped working (although strangely rpm still works) and then a day or two later the check engine light came on. I have a code reader, and the code is P0500. First question: a few days before my mechanic installed a new air filter. Could that have caused the problem? I read something about a reduction test that's often done after installing a new air filter that could trigger a VSS malfunction. Second, beyond the inconvenience of having my speedometer not working, is this something I need to have fixed? In other words, is it a danger? I've spent so much on this car already, and don't want to spend another $300 + unless I have to. Thanks.

Yes, you should get that fixed. Most computer controlled vehicles use the speed sensor input for decisions involving timing and transmission shifting. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Thanks for the advice. Could it have been caused by that reduction test the mechanic did after installing the air filter?

I don't know what they are trying to feed you but i never heard of anything called a "reduction test". Changing an air filter doesn't require anything.
