Weird sound from car

1998 Ford Taurus 128000 6 cylinder/3.0 Every so often, actually maybe once every few days I get this wierd sound from my car. It sounds like it is coming from where my passenger air bag is or just infront of that. It is kinda like a humming sound. It doesn't make it when the car is stopped and doesn't make it constantly or all the time. At first it was only occuring when I drove on a certain road so I thought maybe it was just road sound, but today I hear it on a differnt road. It kinda sounds like something is trying to turn on, or something along those lines. It never lasts more then a few seconds (maybe 20-25). Can't figure out what it might be?

Could you maybe have just changed the A/C temp when this happened? It sounds like a stripped blend door actuator in the A/C system. They have plastic gears and make a noise like that when they get jammed or stripped. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I haven't really used the AC much, in fact just to see if it worked, but it could have happened before I got the car. Would it make that sound without the AC working? I haven't used the AC due to the misfire issue on this car and not wanting to tax the engine that much, plus not really needed it.

It will make the noise any time it tries to change temp setting.

So can I assume this is not a "danger" issue? Exactly what does it mean? Does it mean poor operating AC, I shouldn't use the AC or what? I can live with out AC especially now as we are into the fall months, and as long as "you might die if you don't repair this" is involved then I will remain focused on the misfire issue.

It's just and electric motor that controls the temperature air door. If it's broken, you won't have any temp control.

I might be lucky and it's stuck on real cool, because when I did try the AC it was nice and cold so at least this is not a "big worry issue" thanks...
