Wierd Starter Problems Sign In

Hi, i have a 1979 280zx with a straight 6 i recently invested in. I tried to start it for the first time today and the starter would click but not turn over, so i wire straight from the battery to the solenoid and same thing. So i pulled the starter out and the gear will pop out but it won't spin. I took it to autozone and had it tested and it tested fine. When i put it back on the car it still did the same thing, so i hooked my daily driver to it and tried it and the jumper cables repelled away from each other, but it is hooked up right and no way i had the wires mixed. What's going on? The starter is brand new and is hooked up correctly with no corroded or frayed wiring.

Take the battery out of the car and have it charged and load tested .

I had the battery tested and it was fine, but i took a good one off of a truck and tried it as well to no avail. that's 2 tested and proven good batterys and 1 tested and good starter. I also went ahead and replaced the power wire just in case, but it is still doing it. lol. I think i'll just go fishing for a while and see if i can figure it out on the water. lol.

You've done a lot of testing on the power side, but how good is your ground? Clip a jumper cable to a clean spot of the block and to the ground terminal of the battery and see if that makes it work. If so, replace the ground cable and make sure its connection is clean and tight.

Sorry, i meant to say i replaced both cables. I actually hooked my jumper cables directly to the starter and tried it. It works great when it is off the car, but acts screwy bolted in. There must be something wrong on the car causing it to make a loop with the current since the cables are repelling away from each other. i'm tempted to switch the wires around to see what happens, but i'm really scared of doing that. The thing that gets me is why will the gear pop out but not spin. If it were hooked up backwards the gear would try to go the opposite direction, right?? but then why are the cables repelling away from each other as though they were getting the same charge down each cable? All the lights still work on the car.

When out of the vehicle... the 'Bendix' drive on the starter will engage with either polarity.... possibly the motor will spin also (out of vehicle with no designated ground) But when installed (-) must be your ground! Check your batt. for (pos.)
and (neg.) and start there!
