Wipers Won't stop wiping......... Sign In

Hello All,

My friends 1998 Plymouth Voyager, won't stop wiping in the very low speed range.......

The wipers work OK, in fast mode, instant mode(push the button and spray water).

But, they seem to never stop completely, And, when I move through the speed range of the wipers they don't seem to
change speed too much.

My Friend took it to PEP Boys and they wanted to replace the wiper motor and charge $220, and then they said it would be $800 for a new ECM.

I'm thinking about just putting a switch between the conrtroller and the wiper motor and switch it off and on at the dash somewhere..

Anyone have a shop manual for the design of these wiper systems.......Maybe we could just replace the swithch in the colum, or a controllers somewhere...

Any help would be much appreciated ..............thanks all

An ECM? Wow?

Did they change the wiper motor?

I don't have Alldata for this model of car but I have read about "wiper on relay".

The "wiper on" relay is in the power distribution box in the engine compartment.

You should be able to just swap it with one just like it from another slot.

Well, the HIGH/LOW relay looks unique, but the on/off relay looks like I could just swap it out with another one.....

I'll try that and then see where that gets us.................thanks much HammmerT......

But the question is: what controls the rate of speed of the wiper arms?
Is it the switch with a poteniometer, or
Is it something in the motor,?

I think it is either the High/low relay: the relay is stuck open in low.....ON.
or the switch on the colum that is not fully opening and letting the motor turn off.................

This system operates different than most other vehicles. These relays are controlled by the Body Control Module which can also be your problem but now your getting way beyond your diagnostic and equipment ability. Your pretty much going to need to dealer for anything beyond the relay.

Ya'know what? I'm just going to run a switch between the fan motor and the power.
Maybe the ground wire or the hot wire......don't know.
But I'm not going to pay $800 for BCM and another $200 for the labor and all that........)()(@#)%&#*#%&#&^@#&^#

Get "Old School": I found some control knobs for Wiper systems that have a variable speed adjustment--hot rod stuff--and I'll just put that in the dash somewhere.

Got any better ideas........?????????

You need to think better of that. You have no idea what kind of feedback problems you can create that way. You can instantly do more damage than you can pay for in a year. This is not your old school car and you will regret treating it like one. I told you the Body Control Module was involved in most everything here and you really don't want to fry that.

completely off topic here but this reminds me of the bmw my school has for a rally cross car. we have a short in our fuel pump power and ground wires so we decided to to make our own circuit put a fusible link and a switch for on/off and there we go on our merry way....now we just need to get a new pump since our old one was friedSly

I really find it hard to believe that a technical school is teaching you to go around a failure rather than fix it correctly. That isn't going to help resolve problems you'll have to deal with in the future. We don't repair things that way.
