belt issues with 1995 dodge grand caravan

I need to know if the serpentine belt absolutely needs to go around the harmonic balancer in order for the van to run?
I ask because our van had a belt, but the belt fell off. When we tried to put it back on the only way it would fit is if we didn't put it around the harmonic balancer... Which means that my van has been running for a year without the belt on the HB.

what is this harmonic balancer you speak of?? sounds like your woofers are blown?!

If the drive belt came off, you should find out the reason why or else your going to be doing it again.

I'd like to know how you drove a year without your engine turning the alternator and water pump. Before you drained all the power out of the battery you'd cook the motor until it was locked up. Are you sure you aren't misidentifying a part here?

The water pump is driven by the T-belt if this is a 3.0 but I think he smoked something before posting this and it wasn't the belt.
