death wobble Sign In

98 frieghtliner stepvan5.9 cummins diesel

Just had the front brakes done when I got the truck back I get this awful wobble from the front end. Went and bought 2 new front tires still the same thing. It occurs when I hit about 35mph, not when brakes applied so it is not warped rotors.

Have the truck inspected carefully. That starts with a small out of balance and something loose in the linkage will cause it to go out of control.

Truck is in the shop now, he changed the kingpins, which did have a little play in them but this has not solved the problem. Going broke trying to figure this out.

They make an aftermarket shock called a steering stabilizer that is designed to reduce that if you can't find the problem.

Just some thoughts/ideas for an issue like this exactly after brake work: I plain don't know the design of the brakes but it catches my attention that it is right after this work AND begins at 35 MPH which to me is a bit slow for imbalance unless WILDLY wrong to cause this.

What I have run across is rotors or drums that push on and over a hub/bearing can have dirt, corrosion particles either fall to bottom caught inside or maybe if not indexed back to exact position if machined and put back on may not set true to the hub again. Has happened just rotating tires alone not touching anything else and wheel lugs torqued up properly but is so off of true it's visibly obvious just spinning wheel.

Not all that rare to me and can be seen with just spinning that wheel by hand without any tools to measure run-out right at the rim of wheel while in place. A maybe and if that for ones that did that to me cleaning those surfaces up - gasket scrapers, wire brush or whatever it takes solved it,
