A couple months ago my battery died. When AAA came out to jump it the guy noticed a lot of crap around the battery. He asked if I had any problems with mice making nests in my engine. I said no because I didn't think I did and I figured I park under a tree so maybe the collected refuse was from that. He said he had had numerous battery jumps where mice or rats had jumped out at him! Anway....

This morning my battery died again (I ended up having it replaced this time). I did some more inspection in the engine area. As I looked around I cleaned up some of the detritus that had accumulated and noticed as I looked up....a big lump in the underside of my hood's fabric with a big hole (filled with leaves etc) leading from it!!! So.....what should I do? I don't know if there is actually anything in there but I intend to check later today (how could anything stand the heat this time of year?!). If the nest is now vacated I figured I would just remove all the nesting material and close up the hole. My question is: What is the material made of that lines the underside of the hood and what should I use to close the hole in it?

First thing is get all the debris out - compressed air works pretty good. Is there a wiring problem or was the battery just ready anyway?

Repair to hood insulation is your call. Buy all new, used, or patch with heat tolerant stuff from hardware store to your liking as needed. It must be fire proof and not absorb water.

Critters will do this year round and aren't staying for the ride but know when vehicle is ok for occupation. Most seem to hear you coming and are gone. I find some fried from heat!

Tricks to keep them out include.......

* Mothballs
* Soaps
* Deer repellant spray may help
* Place mice/rat poison sacks as packaging suggests if needed.

These critters can cause a lot of damage and really will chew right thru wiring or bare insulation off of it......
