oil leak from timing cover? Sign In

2002 Nissan Altima 2.5, 89,000 miles

I recently had a blown head gasket repaired. Afterwards, I noticed minor oil seepage. I took it back to the mechanic, they said they fixed it.

The seep turned into a bad leak. I took it back again and now I'm told that it's a complicated job and they need to get behind the timer cover.

Can this leak relating to the timing cover be the result of the head gasket job? I didn't have this leak issue prior to the head gasket work.

Hard to say what came first - the chicken or the egg?

Possible for the head gasket especially if an overheat resulted didn't cause more damage than noticed. IMO, and hard to say but I'd just trust the tech(s) to do the right thing with what they find in need now,

Hmm. He said the original leak was on the crank seal. And when they fixed that, the pressure pushed the leak over to the timer cover. They need to replace a couple of bolts. Being clueless about cars, not sure what that means.

In generalities as I don't know the specific application:

Crank seal may be pressed into timing cover and bolts mentioned may have broken. Oil in or around moving parts will travel. If it was a real fight to get in there the cover may be trashed now - dunno - wasn't there but it might have been a hard time.

Stuff happens and techs deal with it as best they can. Many engines are made with dis-similar metals that love to stick a steel bolt in! Hope if they broke they could extract them ok as that can be a real problem.

Trust they have a clue what perils were there and would allow their judgement to get rid of the leak which is a must one way or the other,
