speedo/oil leak problem Sign In

Volkswagen
1800 GTI
1989/90
75,000

I have a problem with my speedo.
My speedo stopped working, so the mechanic changed it for me, but on my journey home on the motorway
oil was dripping on my foot. So I returned the car and he fitted another new speedo cable, thinking maybe
the first one was faulty, but the same thing happened. On the third attempt he tried another make and fitted
a new speedo cable for the third time, as I began my journey home on the motorway the same thing occurred,
I had oil dripping on my foot. After about 50 miles, the speedo stopped working this time, and the oil drip stopped.
My mechanic doesn't know what to do?
He is at a loss as are the RAC men I have spoken to?
Please advise?
Kind regards
amanda

I guess you didn't like my other post. so we'll try again

As I stated previously if that system is suppose to have oil in it then there would have to be some type of sealing o ring at the speedo head that might have got lost

One more thought is, most systems don't have oil going into them if this is the case with this model, they may have to look a little deeper. The only way this could happen would be if the speedo gear in the trans is defective & allowing gear oil/atf (you didn't say if this was auto or manual) into the cable housing & up to the speedo head.

That would be the next step, inspecting the speeds trans gear........

LOL, I can't find your first reply, and I didn't print it off, sorry, so I posted another, thanks for replying again.
I did like your post, and liked the picture of the wellingtons, great idea, I have been using crocs and a towel, lol.
I am going to pass your reply onto my dad and his mechanic right now. By the way it's manual car. We thought maybe
a seal or something was missing off the first new speedo cable, which is why he replaced it agian, but surely, it couldn't
be missing off of three??
thanks again.
will let you know how I go!
Kind regards
amanda

No not 3 times. I would probably be looking at the speedo gear.

If you click on your name, it will show user posts at the bottom, click on that & it will show the most recent posts... This helps to find misplaced posts
