temperature gauge pegs out
Here's hoping someone can help. I have a 99 chevy lumina, 3.1 liter, 100,000 miles. Driving down the road, temp gauge will peg out almost instantly. Hot lamp will go on. Hoses are not hot to the touch. No water leakage. Any idea what is causing this? Thanks Andie

Have you checked to see if the coolant is low? Are both radiator hoses hot? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I would try a new thermostat but make sure it isn't low on coolant.

The complete history on this, at the beginning, would be very helpful. Both for the problem/s and repair/s....

car would get hot going down the road, at least the gauge would peg out. tried to add coolant /water but it was not low. this went on for about a month gauge would peg out no hot hoses not low on water,Replaced thermastat and temperature sender. did not help, still peged out. then one day in the parking lot , big puddle of coolant under car. Replaced the water pump, front cover gasket and intake gasket. No leaks. Gauge still pegs out

At this point, since it's not boiling over or obviously overheating, you should verify that your gauge is accurate.... The easiest way to would be to look at the coolant temp in the datastream. If it's around the 220/225° area when the fans are coming on & then cools down. That is normal for that car and you have a problem with dash gauge reading....
