we have a 2002 olds alero that is having very bad inside tire wear on the rear tires and im not real sure what the cause of this problem may be. if it was the front i would know where to start but i have never had this problem with rear tires before

It's not different. It's still a wheel alignment problem assuming nothing is bent from collision damage. Go get a wheel alignment and they will tell you if anything is bent and whether it can be corrected.

is it common for both tires to do that if it is an alignment issue? if it was one side or the other i would think it was a bearing issue or even like a tie rod thing.

No, that's perfectly normal. They both have individual toe adjustments and some have camber adjustments too.
