I have a 2001 Toyota Camry. As I was driving home from work, the gas pedal randomly stopped working when I tried to accelerate from a stop light. I was able to press the pedal to the floor but, to no avail. I coasted my way over to the side of the road and came to a stop. From there, I restarted the car and tried it again. After about 10/15 minutes on the phone, I tried once more and this time the gas pedal was once again working normally. This has happened sporadically on a couple of other occasions but, only momentarily. I have never had to pull over to the side of the road like this and plan for a tow truck. When I brought my car in to a service shop, the mechanic told me that what I was telling him was a "mechanical impossibility." I would greatly appreciate any help as I would not like to run into a situation where I actually need to have my car towed.

What you are saying is that the engine stalled, right? Of course the gas pedal wouldn't respond if the engine isn't running. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

No, the engine was running just fine. I was at a stop light..it was the gas pedal that was not responding or accelerating the car from a standing position

This is a "drive by wire" system with an electronic throttle system so it's entirely possible but it will set a trouble code so you need to have the computer scanned for any stored codes.

That is what the automechanic told me when I asked him to check it out.

Well, someone else needs to look again. I'm showing electronic throttle on both the 4 cylinder and V6.

Hmm interesting. He seemed pretty confident though- opened up the hood and showed me how it works. Said, he's never had someone come in with this problem in all his years as an automechanic.. blah blah blah. I don't know Sh!t about cars though, hence the problem. I'm looking into taking it to a toyato dealership.
